To calculate the cost of materials for a project, multiply the unit
price by the amount needed. For example, you are adding grass to your
backyard. Grass costs $2 per square foot. Your yard is 30 feet long,
and 40 feet wide. To calculate the total cost of grass, do the
following:
grass = $2/sqft
length = 30 feet
width = 40 feet
area = 30 feet × 40 feet = 1,200 sqft
cost = $2/sqft × 1,200 sqft = $2,400
You are also building a fence around your yard. The wood for the fence
costs $15 per linear foot. You don't need a fence for one of the width
sides of your yard, since that side is next to your house. To calculate
the total cost of the fence, do the following:
fence = $15/foot
length = 30 feet
width = 40 feet
border = (30 feet × 2) + 40 feet = 100 feet
cost = $15/foot × 100 sqft = $1,500
